The Basics
The Chelan Camp is a fully supported cycling camp, and while the focus is on the riding, the long weekend isn’t just about the bike. The Lake Chelan area is home to fantastic hiking, provides opportunities for water sports, and boasts a fabulous wine industry. For interested cyclists and/or significant others participating in the Chelan Camp, there will be opportunities to check out all that Lake Chelan and the surrounding areas have to offer. An early riding start will ensure plenty of time to relax or explore after each day’s ride.
Every morning, we will have a nutritious breakfast and a pre-ride coaching clinic. On the road, we will have great ride food, mechanical support, and Cycle U Coaches riding amongst the group. Feel free to ask the coaches any questions you have about the day’s coaching clinic or anything else. Ride by yourself or with a group of friends. After the ride, healthy recovery food will be available at the motel, along with a chance to soak in a hot tub or cool off in the pool.
Dinners are on your own, but after dinner every evening we will have a short presentation. I’m sure we’ll be showing movies—likely the Tour de France! We might even have a few refreshments at movie time.
The Daily Rides
Thursday: for the early-birds, we will provide a suggested easy 16 mile route from Chelan to Manson and back. You are on your own on this one; there won’t be any support, but there are plenty of stores along the way. Route 150 has a nice shoulder, follows the lakeshore, and offers stunning views across the lake. Chelan itself is very bike friendly. Why not take some time to explore town on your bike? We’ll have a short meeting on Thursday evening outlining camp logistics, routes, support, coaching, etc.
Friday: We might as well start off the camp with a stunning ride with tremendous river and mountain views! The big weekend goal is a successful climb of McNeil Canyon, and today we’ll take a look at what is to come…by riding down the canyon. Of course, one must go up to go down!
Route: Chelan—Apple Acres Road—Pateros—Brewster—Bridgeport—Top of McNeil Canyon—Down McNeil—Chelan—Estimated total 65+ miles
Saturday: Yesterday we were off in the remote hinterlands. Today we will stick closer to town, but the riding is just as sensational. The camp is designed to alternate easy and hard riding days. Today’s ride has lots of climbing with fantastic lake views, but a good bit of it is optional, and we’ll ride less miles than on Friday. An option for a shorter day will enable wine lovers to return in time for an afternoon winery tour.
Route: Chelan— quiet Cooper Gulch Rd. (optional final climb of six miles each way to tiny Echo Lake Ski Area)—Cooley Rd. (Ivan Morse optional climb three miles each way)—Upper and Lower Joe Creek—Manson—Chelan—Estimated total 30-45 miles, depending on options. (Note: If you have the energy, ride out and back from downtown Chelan and do the very tough 1.1 mile Butte climb for another five+ miles, for a total of approx. 50 miles.)
On Saturday afternoon, any interested camp participants are invited to join a winery tour. The vineyards of Lake Chelan surround one of the largest lakes in the United States, which spans over 50 miles in length. The vintners call the conditions created by the location near the lake the “lake effect.” The lake effect moderates temperatures in the summer and winter, which results in consistent temperatures, a long growing season, and reduced risk of extreme winter freeze. Combine these ideal temperature conditions with great soils and you have a combination that provides all that’s needed for terrific grape growing. We’ll sample three of the 14 wonderful wineries in the region: Benson Vineyards, Tsillan Cellars, and Vin du Lac (subject to change). Sign-up for the winery trip will be posted as the camp nears.
Sunday: Today we will tackle McNeil Canyon, one of the most difficult climbs around. Though not the longest climb at five miles, the steepness ensures that you will earn this one. Riders wishing to opt out can always jump in the van. We won’t tell. We promise!
Route: Chelan—up McNeil, a 5 mile beast of a climb, and what campers can set as a goal for the weekend—quiet back roads to Waterville—a fast drop down Waterville Canyon on US2—back to Chelan on 97—Estimated total approx. 55 miles
Monday: Those wishing to hurry back to work will likely depart early, but the rest of us are going to ride today! One of the best climbs in the Chelan area is up the Navarre Coulee. The grade is moderate, the scenery gorgeous, and cars scarce. Doing today’s basic loop will give riders a nice 32 mile ride with two solid climbs. Those wanting to delay the inevitable departure can add another 20 flat miles by riding out and back along the south shore of Lake Chelan to 25 Mile Creek State Park. Bathrooms and water are available at this park. Riders who have challenged themselves enough over the weekend can do a mostly flat out and back ride of anywhere between 20 and 40 miles along the south lakeshore.
Route: Chelan—Alt 97 climb and descent—Navarre Coulee Rt. 971 climb—drop down with great views to Lake Chelan State Park—South Lakeshore Rd.—Chelan—Estimated total 32.4 miles. Optional out-back to 25 Mile Creek State Park adds 20 more miles for 52 total miles. Riders desiring a flat route can do a 40 mile out and back to 25 Mile Creek State Park, or shorten it by stopping at Lake Chelan State Park for 20 total miles.
